Valentines Day... eww.

Whatever happened to the fun happy-going years of elementary school where we passed "Be My Valentine" cards with lollipops stuck to the side with tape. Then it wasn't a matter of who likes who, but it was a tradition that all us kids did just because we were told to. Heck, we did it for the candy! But as the little innocent kids of the good old days grew up into adolescence, it has become realized that Valentines Day was supposed to be a special day between two people.

 Eww.

I don't see what's so special about it. All it is is a day set apart to recognize couples everywhere. Don't they already show themselves off? Why do we need to make an official holiday to show what is already obvious? That "day" is not as special as a one week anniversary in my opinion and just an excuse to give gifts. Oh, lets not forget to mention how much it stresses out people, especially girls, on who is going to be their valentine. It's not even worth it to stress about that.

I don't think people even care anymore.

Or maybe it is all subjective. Those who have a boyfriend or girlfriend generally like it and those of us who do not do not. Valentines Day is black and white, you either hate it or you love it; there is no middle ground, no grey to make it seem likes it is all right not to have a valentines. However, I applaud those who don't care; those who are immune to cupid's arrow. They have the real strength to ignore such a useless holiday.

  1. Valentines Day, to me, lies in the grey area. This can be a great day. A day that the guy you’ve secretly adored comes to your rescue in a very prince charmingish way that makes you fall head over heals in love. That’s what the idea is. That’s what every awaiting girl is dreaming for; The day that he’ll take notice, and respond to her in the most witty and cunning way possible. But in actuality, Valentines Day is just a day like any other. You wake up, you go to work or school, and you go home. There is no magic and no spells just cards and candy.
I really think that when the movie- made- act doesn’t play out the way the awaiting girl dreamed for, she is left with no one to blame. So she blames the day. The day that was just like any other, only without a card or candy.

  2. Ok i wrote a big comment for nothing since it got erased... thank god i remember what i wrote. Anywho...

I personally am blissfully unaware of the existence of Valentines day. The Brazilian holiday is a less commercialized actual holiday rather then a marketing ploy. It does feel like it takes a bit away from the meaning of the holiday, and i personally don't think they should put so much importance in it. However, as Horace said, "Carpe Diem," Pluck (or Seize) the day. You must make the best out of it.

I guess it's easy to be alienated by such a corporate event, and hard to ignore it completely, specially if you don't have an equivalent day like me in your own culture. Hence you must make the best of that day, in your own definition, because you must always make the best of the things you have and receive (or in this case, have to live through). I my self go out with my friends, because it is a day that is charged with love, and love isn't simply a one gal one guy kind of thing, it has a plethora of definitions it can take on, including friendship.

We're young, enjoy and don't make too much of it, its all fun and games :). Hope you make the best of the day on how you chose to (or not to) celebrate it. :D

  3. I totally feel you. The thing is people tend to forget about things and not see it, Valentine's Day is like a reminder about that special someone or whatever and reminds you about the appreciation and everything. The thing is that big companies commercialize it and make Valentine's Day so industrial and gay it makes you hate it. It also sucks when you don't have a Valentines to celebrate with. It is dumb, but whatever there is no point in really caring or getting angry it's just one day let them have it.

I miss getting candy on Valentine's Day it was a pre-Halloween, the cards were always dumb though.

  4. I agree with you I think Valentines day is either liked or loved and I believe that the people who have someone to share that "holiday" with are the ones who enjoy the most. And the ones who don't haev anyone hate it just because they dont have someone. Personally I like Valentines day boyfriend or not I think its sweet.
